Our rifle range is located 2 miles North and ¼ East of the CAS range on the North side of West 2000 road. We have dirt berms with steel targets set at 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 yards. The matches are restricted to the use of lead bullets only. Gas checks are OK, but jacketed bullets are NOT allowed. Rifles must be of a type in use before 1898; single shot, lever action or pump with an external hammer. The covered firing line will accommodate 6 shooters at a time. Shooting is done from a sitting position using a crossed stick rest. We do not have space for prone shooting. A course of fire requires 15 scored shots which is a total of 5 shots fired at each of 3 different distances with 1 point for the closest distance, 3 points for the next distance and 5 points for the farthest distance for a potential perfect score total of 45 points. Also a shooter is allowed 2 sighting shots at each distance if he wishes. In the case of a tie, a shoot off is conducted using a smaller target at the farthest distance. Our matches are a test of marksmanship and are not timed events. We use radios behind the targets and spotters to aid the shooter by indicating hits or misses on an overhead shot spotting replica of the actual target.
The Free State Rangers is a Single Action Shooters Society (SASS) affiliated club. Our matches are shot using SASS long range rifle rules for equipment and ammunition. Appropriate SASS attire is required on match days.

Big Bore Lever Action rifles are shot at 200, 300, and 400 yards. Big Bore Single Shot (BBSS) and Buffalo (black powder) rifles are shot at 300.400 and 500 yards.
We also shoot .22 caliber matches at 100, 150 and 200 yards. .22 caliber matches may use both lever action rifles and .22 caliber rifled barrel inserts which are placed in the barrel of a BBSS rifle or a period correct .22 caliber single shot rifle.
If time permits, we shoot a Military Bolt Action match using original military caliber and configuration rifles i.e., Enfields, Krags, Mausers, Moison Nagants, Springfields, These rifles are shot at 300, 400, and 500 yards using the same 45 point total scoring method.
